Guide · OpenText Exstream

Which OpenText Exstream version should we move to?

A practical guide for UK and European teams on older Exstream, HP Exstream or Exstream 16 releases: how the release lines work, what to check before you choose, and how to upgrade without changing what customers receive.

The short answer

Move to a current, supported release line, but choose it on evidence

For most organisations the right target is a current, supported release of OpenText Communications (Exstream), on the deployment model that suits you: on-premises, private cloud or OpenText cloud. The exact release depends on four things: your support position, your infrastructure, the features you need, and how much change your templates can absorb in one step.

Do not pick a version from a slide. OpenText publishes its support lifecycle and a version comparison for Communications. Check your current release against both before you plan anything.

Why this question keeps coming up

Many UK and European insurers, banks and public bodies still run Exstream releases installed years ago, sometimes still branded HP Exstream. They work, so they were left alone. Then one of three things happens: support status changes, the infrastructure underneath needs replacing, or a regulation such as the European Accessibility Act or FCA Consumer Duty asks for output the old release cannot easily produce.

What has changed in newer releases

OpenText now presents Exstream as part of OpenText Communications. Newer releases bring a browser-based design and editing experience, better options for business users to change approved content, container-based deployment, and improved accessible PDF output. Your existing applications, packaged files and templates can usually be carried forward, but they need to be tested.

Before you choose

Six things to check

Answer these and the right release line usually becomes obvious.

Support status

Where your current release sits on OpenText's support lifecycle, and how long the target release will be supported.

Infrastructure

Operating systems, databases and servers the target release supports, and whether you want to move to containers or cloud.

Features you need

Accessible PDF/UA output, business-user editing, interactive documents or new channels such as SMS and email.

Integrations

How Exstream is called today: batch, on demand, from SAP, Guidewire, Duck Creek or a core banking system.

Template estate

How many applications and templates you have, how many are still used, and which can be retired before you move.

Your release cadence

How often you can test and release. A team that upgrades once a year needs a different plan from one on a quarterly rhythm.

How we upgrade

An upgrade that customers never notice

Inventory

We list every application, template, font, driver and integration, and confirm what is still in use.

Target and route

We recommend a release line and a route: direct, or staged through an intermediate release if that is safer.

Compare output

We run the same data through old and new versions and compare the output page by page before sign-off.

Cut over

We go live with a rollback plan, then hand over documentation so your team can run it.

FAQ

Questions about Exstream upgrades

Can we go straight from HP Exstream to a current release?

Often yes, with the right preparation. The inventory shows whether a direct route or a staged one is safer for your applications.

Will our documents change?

They should not, unless you choose to change them. Font rendering and print drivers can differ between releases, which is why we compare output before sign-off.

Should we move to OpenText cloud at the same time?

Only if it suits your organisation. Upgrading and changing hosting in one step adds risk. Many teams upgrade first and move hosting later.

How long does it take?

It depends on the number of applications, templates and integrations. After the inventory you get a plan with phases and dates rather than a guess.

This guide is general information. Always confirm support dates and version details with OpenText for your licence.
